Controversial Zoo Hopes to Solve Area Panhandling Problem E-mail
Written by S.D. Malone
Boink-Town, U.S.A-  Amidst the recent debates over how to effectively manage the area’s panhandling community, a local entrepreneur has stepped forward with a bold and, what he calls, “exciting” proposition for dealing with the situation.  George Campbell is planning to present his suggestion for a “Hobo Zoo and Botanical Garden” to city officials in the coming weeks.  According to Campbell, housing the panhandlers in a zoo atmosphere will be beneficial to both the public at large, and the hobos themselves.

"By putting the hobos in a controlled environment, it is possible to ensure both their well-being and the comfort of the public.  If a regular, workaday person wants to see a panhandler, they can stop by the zoo and take a peek without having to worry about being accosted in the streets.  At the Hobo Zoo and Botanical Garden, patrons will be encouraged to give freely of the change provided by the facility which will allow the panhandlers to practice their craft and give citizens the opportunity to give money to the hobos without all of the moral hang-ups that come with having to decide between helping someone else or buying a cup of premium coffee.  The zoo’s positive effects will be multi-pronged; getting panhandlers off of the streets, easing the conscience of the public, providing jobs for upkeep of the facility, and giving Boink-Town residents an attractive botanical garden.”

Campbell also hopes that in time, he will be able to breed hobos in captivity, a feat never before accomplished and comparable to mating pandas or great white sharks.  It is unknown how city officials will react to the proposal, but it is safe to say that no matter what their decision, it’s nice to see someone try to make a difference.
