Schroeder's embarrassing restaurant. Boink-Town - Local entrepreneur Larry Schroeder has always had his finger on the pulse of the fickle enterprise that is fad dining (among other things). His newest venture is one that he believes will “take America by storm,” playing up the latest trend in sandwich making which is the simple process of toasting bread. Inspired by the incessant stream of advertising by such industry giants as Subway and Quiznos, Schroeder has opened ToastPoint; a casual dining restaurant in which everything revolves around the artful toasting of different breads. According to Schroeder, the idea simply came to him one day while he was watching TV; “I was quite surprised when I realized that consumers would actually pay money for something that they could simply make at home by popping a slice of bread in the toaster.
I remember seeing a commercial for Subway’s ‘new’ toasted sandwiches in which people were astonished at the concept of having a sandwich served to them on toasted bread. It was like a lightning bolt struck me right in the head. I turned to my wife and said, ‘honey…this is it!’ I immediately took out a third mortgage on the house and went about finding a location.” From that enlightening moment, a new sensation was born. ToastPoint has been in business now for three weeks, and Schroeder says that business is booming. His number one seller right now is the basic white bread with butter on it…the toasted pumpernickel with cream cheese is a close second. Treebune.com asked some ToastPoint patrons what makes the restaurant such a hit. Area resident Donald Thomas claims that he likes the value that he gets at the new restaurant, “Tell me where else I can get two slices of toasted sourdough with grape jelly for four dollars and thirty-five cents…it’s a steal—plus, I almost feel full when I leave.” Soccer mom Wanda Pierce says that ToastPoint has “delivered a product that even my finicky kids will eat. In this day and age,” she went on to say, “you can’t beat a place that will appeal to the overly ridiculous whims of children. I thought it was great when you could get real Campbell’s condensed soup at McDonald’s, but ToastPoint makes that place look like Hardees for crying out loud.” There is no telling where Schroeder’s creative genius will lead diners next. He says that he is thinking about adding tap water with ice to the menu soon, along with other surefire hits such as Ramen noodles, instant pudding, and perhaps even saltines. Only time will tell. |
