For Whom The Bell Tolls. Washington D.C. - Following six years of devoted service to the current Salvation Army administration, Secretary of Offense (a position of great importance in the organization as it is in charge of developing proactive strategies for increasing donations and support of services) Ronald Bumsfeld has stepped down from his post--a bombshell announcement which will take full effect January 1, 2007. Citing a need for a “fresh perspective” in the role, Bumsfeld reportedly made his decision known to Salvation Army President Greg Rush in a private meeting held well in advance of the notification to the public and other officials in the Army’s ranks.
The resignation comes on the heels of recent tumultuous years in which the Salvation Army found itself in engaged in battles with large retailers who questioned the group’s fund raising tactics, most notably the holiday staple of the Salvation Army volunteer standing at storefronts, ringing their bells next to the trademark red buckets, imploring retail customers to donate their spare change. The ensuing stalemate between the organization under Bumsfeld’s leadership and retail chains is said to have resulted in important losses of revenue that would have greatly aided the Salvation Army’s great charitable works. Some experts on philanthropy even went so far as to suggest that Bumsfeld had placed the Salvation Army in the middle of a Christmas time quagmire as he failed to adapt to the constantly changing landscape of political correctness and defiant retailers who did not want to see their patrons “bothered” by the constant requests for aiding a worthy cause or “insulted” by volunteers’ continued, impolite use of the phrase “Merry Christmas”--both issues that Bumsfeld either did not react to in an appropriate fashion, or was too myopic to foresee as possible situations in the first place…a talent that he was supposed to have possessed in his job. Shortly after Bumsfeld’s resignation was made public, Rush announced his plans to install former CIA (Charitable Institute of America) director Michael Bolton (no relation) as his administration’s new Secretary of Offense. In the meantime, Bumsfeld is kind of biding his time as the balance of his tenure runs it’s course, assuring his fellow officers that he has enjoyed his years of service, and looks forward to lending any help that might be necessary to his successor. |
